Imagine yourself walking home from work, earbuds plugged into the latest Burna Boy’s Album, Sun’s out. It’s Friday night, and you have plans to meet up with a funky, fun friend who is always up for getting down. Moments like these can feel like you’re on top of the world. All the pieces fit. The path is lit up with a melody so perfectly aligned with your natural pace, and it is as if the lyrics were written for you. Only you.
After what feels like floating to the night’s destination, your friend leads the road to this SILENT BREW she’s been talking about all week long. In a spacious and Serene atmosphere – situated between two of your favorite boutiques in the city – BATURE BREWERY, there is… a silent disco.
Yeah, what’s a silent disco? You ask. Grab a pair of headphones, she responds.
Peering in, the scene is like any other dance party: uninhibited moves, sometimes drinks, glistening brows, some mad auditory scientist spinning obscure technology you might not know the name of. It’s a disco alright, but where is the sound?
A silent disco or silent rave is a new concept and contemporary style event where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via a radio transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participants. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the impression of a room full of people dancing to nothing. Bamboozling and fascinating to watch.
For those asking what a silent party is all about, it’s a party which gives you options. It gives you the option to be social or anti-social, the option to sing, dance and have fun or just hum and stare at those having fun, the option to wear whatever you are most comfortable in and the option to switch channels and listen to 3 Dj’s plus make song requests.
At Silent Disco parties, ladies attend without any harassment or scrutiny, be it a house party or club. They don’t ask “who did you come with?”, if you can pay your bill and they certainly won’t say we can’t serve or attend to you if unaccompanied by a guy. They don’t turn you away because you didn’t wear a pair of heels or shoes that don’t look fancy enough, your hairstyle or dress code isn’t their concern – all they are concerned about is making the party as much fun as possible. To the fellas, the same thing applies, no profiling. So come in your flip flops, sneakers or shorts – they just want you to have fun!
Back in New York at least before 2005, there would be only one channel available to listen to music through. Over time, the technology moved along to where there were two, and later technology allowed for a third channel that three separate DJs could broadcast over at the same time.
First appearing for a while as a rave or dance party, other industries have adopted the format for its personal, experimental, and meditative reasons. Now silent discos take shape alongside other stages at modern music festivals, as well as in smaller, intimate spaces like silent yoga classes, equipped with wireless headphones, a group of people who are up for trying something new, an instructor, and a DJ tuning into the vibes of the room.
Nisandra, a lady who attended the last house of Oni silent disco party explained more interestingly “DISCLAIMER: I AM AN INTROVERT. THE ONLY YELLING I DO IS IN CAPS LOCK. I have years of experience being told, “You’re so quiet!” and then wishing I’d retorted with, “Maybe you’re just loud.” (So far I’ve only said it in my head.) As a result, my stamina for loud people is determined on a case-by-case basis, but I can say with complete confidence that I always like loud music. In fact, my favorite pastime is paying money to watch the same musicians I blast through my earbuds play their music through high quality amps, straight into my face. I’m pretty sure the only reason I consistently attend spin classes is because the music is deafening.
All this is to say, the idea of a silent disco, those gatherings where people jam out to their own personal little dance parties that you’ve probably seen on commercials and at music festivals, seemed nothing short of a match made in heaven for me. It looks a little awkward from the outside, sure, but I don’t have to “talk” (scream-shout) at anyone, can control my own volume and I get to look like an aspiring DJ with big fancy headphones? SIGN ME UP!”
“Whether it’s a noise pollution issue in a natural environment or a night time noise ordinance, we can avoid both situations and have a much smaller sonic footprint. It allows us to dream up events in super unconventional places—a late night hotel pool party, or a forest preserve, or a remote beach.” – Jesse.
Bayo, a medical doctor and regular attendee at house of Oni silent disco parties said “Thankfully, I reside in Lagos, so finding such a gathering and signing up for it takes barely forty seconds. I landed on House of Oni website via their Instagram bio. I saw the words “Silent Disco Party”, blocked out my Saturday night and, believe me, I can’t wait to be there after a week long stress at work.
Silent Disco party is a uniquely amazing contemporary style of event but a moment at House of Oni is an entirely different cruise altogether. House of Oni quiet events is the favourite spot for party goers, introverts, corporate event lovers and gamers bored of the ordinary conventional music hangouts and looking for a place to experience an out-of-the-mundane kind of fun. It’s relaxing, it’s welcome and fun for everyone.
